Prom Songs by Hannah Clemmons

Prom is right around the corner and song requests are needed.

The DJ hired by the junior class takes suggestions and plays the songs students actually want to hear. Recently students have become interested in artist such as Wiz Khalifa and Katy Perry. Conveniently, some of these artists have released new songs that set the dancing tone, perfect for the prom setting. Then there are artists that are easier to listen to than to dance along with. And there are those artists who have always been dance party favorites.

During the fall, many students attended the Wiz Khalifa concert. "My favorite song by him is 'Black and Yellow'," said Burris senior Danielle Watkins, "It better be played at prom!" Songs by these artists prove to be influential to students due to the fact that it inspired Burris senior Jordan Swoape to dress in black and yellow attire for prom. These artists have a large influence on students, whether they know it or not. Especially those who bring a new flavor to the music world.

"E.T." by Katy Perry is currently the number one song on iTunes. The Grammy Nominee stands as one of the hottest current artists. Although, "E.T." and other Katy Perry songs do not have the true dance feel. "I really like listening to her, but not dancing," said Burris senior Kendra Carr. Other students agree that although Perry is a good current artist, her songs are not wanted at prom.

Souldja Boy has always been a hit at the Burris dances. His hits "Crank That" and "She Got A Donk" are frequently requested at dances because they have moves that go along with the songs. "Songs with specific moves are the best because everyone knows them so everyone actually dances," said Burris senior Rachel Rector. Some of these songs include "Cha Cha Slide" by DJ Casper, "Teach Me How To Dougie" by Cali Swag District and "Cupid Shuffle" by Cupid.

This year it is up to the students to produce the song list for Burris Prom 2011. It is safe to assume that the playlist will include new songs as well as old favorites.
