Movie Review: Mars Needs Moms

By: Paige Chambers
Mars Needs Moms is a Walt Disney Studio production which was released on March 11, 2011. The director of the animated film is Simon Wells, the great grandson of H.G Wells, who also was involved in the creating of other animated movies such as Shark Tale, Antz, and Madacasgar. The movie is 88 minutes long and is rated PG. The genre is Sci-Fi because of the adventures in outer space. Mars Needs Moms is based on the book by Berkeley Breathed.

The plot consists of a 9-year-old boy named Milo, played by Seth Green, traveling to Mars to save his mother from the martians which have held her captive. Before the martians come to take his mother away, Milo tells her he does not see why mothers are so special and that his life would be better without her. Once realizing they have her on the rocket, Milo sneaks into the rocket as they blast off to Mars. Once there, Milo meets a friend, Gribble. Gribble explains what the martians are going to do with his mom as the same thing happened to him when he was younger. Although Gribble was unsuccessful in saving his own mother, he agrees to help Milo. Milo learns the martians have taken his mother in order to take her ways of discipline and uses them on the robot moms in Mars, as there is an increase in "hatchlings" or Mars children. With the help of one good martian, Ki, they set off to save Milo's mother. Watch the movie to find out whether or not Milo, Ki, and Gribble are able to save Milo's mom and return home!

I watched this movie over spring break, as it was released on the Disney cruise. I really enjoyed the movie as I found it interesting and also funny. It's a great children's movie and the animation is done very well. I would recommend going to see it as it is something the whole family can enjoy.
