Boys Golf by Derek Packard

The Burris golf team has begun their season as of the week of March fourteenth through the eighteenth. The team is short several players this year after they lost both seniors and other class mates to other sports such as baseball and track. The Boys golf teams home course is Cardinal Hills, which is located out near Whapahani. The boys have played out at this course for a long history and look to continue the tradition.
The boys team has new coach’s this year which consist of Rick Phipps and Johnny Phipps. Rick is a graduate from Muncie Southside, while his son Johnny is a graduate from Muncie Burris and currently is studying at Ivy Tech. Johnny Phipps also was a participant on the Muncie Burris Golf team when he attended Muncie Burris. Both Rick and Johnny have extensive golf experience while they will both be helping the boys with there golf swings as well as their behavior on the course.
There are currently five boys on the Muncie Burris Golf team. There are three Muncie Burris boys added with two Indiana Academy boys to create the team. For Burris Alex Phipps, Derek Packard, and Frank Okrup are all juniors and are the only boys coming out for the team from Burris. From the Indiana Academy Jimmy Tuttle a senior as well as Jin Yooh a junior are the boys that came from the Indiana Academy. Jimmy Tuttle made it to regional’s at the Players Club in Yorktown individually last year. The team hopes to make it to the same spot this year but as a team this time.
Johnny Phipps being a first year coach had this to say about the team and season,” We’ve got a lot of talent. We are going to be hard pressed this year at events because of a low player turnout, but we’ll be successful because of the talented players we have.” Academy Junior Jin Yooh said, ” he is looking forward to the season and cant wait till the first match.”
The boys really want to excel this year and do as well as they can as a team. Once they are done as a team the boys hope to continue as far as they can in the state tournament as an individual. The players and coaches hope that the season goes smoothly and that they also win confrence.
