Movie Review: I Am Number Four

By: Paige Chambers
I Am Number Four is a Walt Disney production, released on February 11, 2011. The director is D.K. Caruso who also directed Disturbia and Eagle Eye. The running time of the movie is 109 minutes and is rated PG-13.

The plot consists of a young man, John Smith, played by Alex Pettyfer, running as fugitive from the enemies of his home planet. He has escaped to Earth, along with the other 8, trying to hide from the evilness of the Mogadorian's. They are killing the last 9 survivors of the planet off one by one. The first three are dead, and John is number four, meaning he will be next to be killed. Once finally settling down in a small town in Ohio, he meets a girl who he falls in love with. The Mogadorian's find him and John and number six fight off some of them in order to escape. John must leave the love of his life to find numbers 5, 7, 8, and 9. The movie ends with this, leaving room for a sequel.

Will John and number 6 find the others? Will John come back to Ohio and be with the love of his life? Will they save their planet? Will the defeat the Mogadorian's? A sequel will have to be released in order these questions. In my opinion, a sequel is the only true options. This movie was made very well and was very interesting and leaves you waiting. I hope there is a sequel.

Butler and UConn Title Game

On Monday April fourth, Butler a number eight seed played UConn, a number three seed for the NCAA Tournament title game. The game was pretty slow due to the missed shots and great defense. At the half Butler was leading 22-19. And then UConn took over and with Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lamb and they then began to shoot better. The Huskies beat the bulldogs 53-41. With Bulldogs having the worst shooting percentage in NCAA Title game History at 18.8.
Good luck next year Bulldogs.

Sergei Khrushchev visits Ball State!

Students all around campus gathered to watch this famous son of former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev speak about Russian-U.S. relations. Born in 1935, Sergei grew up during the tensions between Russia and the United Stated, often witnessing the effects of these pressures firsthand and through his father. During his speech, which was held in the Student Center Ballroom on April 4, Khrushchev recapped the events of the Cold War, emphasizing the importance of disintegrating blame concerning the situation. Instead, he offered the suggestion that the events of the Cold War, WWII, and any further conflict between our two countries resulted as a direct outcome of confrontation. This word, along with its connotations and meanings, circulated through much of Khrushchev's presentation. At one point, the speaker compared the U.S. and Soviet Russia to two children, proud and unable to back down from an argument. In this way, he attempted to explain the escalating uncertainties felt by both countries, the fear emulated from lack of communication, and the blame placed by parties unwilling to blame themselves.
As much as he spoke about the relations between our country and his, Khrushchev spoke most about how these relations evolved over time. From the Churchill/ Nixon/ Stalin tensions to the meetings between John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev to determine decisions about nuclear warfare, Sergei Khrushchev observed the professionalism displayed by both sides, but also commented on the lack or regard for the commonwealth in many cases. This problem, he stated, was solved by the meeting between his father and JFK, in which nuclear capabilities were discussed. Although the U.S. housed hundreds of nuclear weapons, compared to the Soviet Unions six, neither side was willing to risk the casualties to their own sides that would result from both sides' deployment, proving respectable leaders, avoiding nuclear war, and reaching a common ground.
Perhaps one of the most eye-opening topics of the night proved to be the introduction to the Soviet side of things. While, in history books and lectures, we are taught the fear and anger instilled in every American, Sergei Khrushchev reflected these concepts into the emotions he and his fellow Russians also felt at the time. A huge worry, he stated, arose from the inability of the Soviet Union to be recognized by other states. The ambitions and political stances of the S.U. were disregarded to the point that the Soviet Union felt it necessary to challenge America; however, America's obvious nuclear superiority caused fear in the hearts of all Russians, mirroring that fear that arose in Americans during the same time.
Overall, Khrushchev's speech helped to unite the ideas, ambitions, and directions felt and taken by the United States and the Soviet Union beyond the events of the Cold War. Now, he argues, it is up to our future to reunite the countries themselves. We must not plan only for what we know, he says, but also for what we do not. We need each other, but we have our own interests. We must find the balance- the common ground.

Khrushchev referred to his 2006 book, Nikita Khrushchev and the Creation of a Superpower, an account of his father's ambitions and memories during the late 1940's and beyond.

Battle: LA

by Derek Packard

Battle LA is a non stop action thriller, as well as a marine recruiting video. The movie is filled with a nonstop battle between a marine ground unit patrolling the battle ridden streets of LA with mechanical aliens around every corner. The troop must do what any home marine base would do, protect the United States of America at all costs.

The troop is made of a few good men who are lead by a soon to be retired Marine ground unit commander who has had experience in Afghanistan as well as Iraq. At first many people would think that the Aliens are going to have fazors as well as vaporizers. Then your thought will turn to the idea of oh this is just another Terminator and we are just watching another John Connor special.

Mid way through you realize though that this movie wont be just another encounters of the third kind but that it has a good story line. The movie will start to remind you more of movies such as Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, and Behind Enemy Lines. Sure the story line is predictable and at points it doesn’t seem like it will end. If this is your kind of movie though you will defiantly enjoy it. If you are the peace loving pacifist, you may want to go see another movie.

Patriotic theme the team holds up is crossed with controversy in between the troops. Some believe the mission is impossible and that every one is dead. The marine commander also with holds a brutal reputation that he gained during a heart breaking incident in his tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. The continuous fighting is broken between should be heart break and moral up lifting or down lifting moments.

Overall the movie would earn a high B maybe a low A if it was lucky. There are to many movies now a days that have the same theme or even story lines. All Battle LA is is a mix between the newly released Terminator and stories such as Black Hawk Down. It’s a great guys night out movie, but its definitely not something you want to see with your girl friend if your looking for a nice date.
